Hero was a disappointment

I've so looked forward to Corbin's book and I happen to LOVE this author but it just didn't do it for me. Too much of the same trope I could have found in other books. I came to expect a super alpha hero who cherished his heroines and who goes to depth of hell to prove his love and showed how sorry he was. This book didn't quite deliver on that. The hero, Corbin, broke the heroine's heart and trust way too much for me to keep rooting for him. There was just too much stalling and juvenile games on both sides so that they can avoid the big talk of why their relationship crumbled. The story wrapped up way too quickly for me to get any sense of satisfaction of seeing the hero truly repent and proved himself a changed man.

Corbin. Sigh. He was a just a big idiot and coward IMO. He had a good thing going with Ruby with then were younger and they started dating. But as young men tends to do, he didn't appreciate what he had so he went and ruin it. He broke up with the heroine (for a third time), claiming he not's ready for anything deeper with her and goes to bangs another chick the day after. I was so heartbroken along with Ruby when she found him with another girl. I mean, I was hoping for it to be a misunderstanding or fake setup. But no, he really did dumped her, got wasted drunk and screwed another chick. Lames excuses that we see in so many other books. "I was young, a stupid kid, you deserve better than me"...blah blah blah. I could give a rat's behind that he was too young to be equipped to handle his emotions. Or that he didn't believe in everlasting love and really was doing the heroine a favor. Grow some balls buddy. She was young too, she didn't step out like a weenie for fear of love. And even though it wasn't "cheating" as they were broken up it was still messed up in my eyes what he did. Poor Ruby to catch him in the act, I would have walked away and never look back. But he tripled dare her to forgive him (rolls eyes) as he's running after her.... fresh from screwing the other chick. The heroine does, thus started the whole ridiculous games they played for the next 6 years of triple daring each other instead of owning up to their feelings.

So that set the precedent for the book and just taint any joy I had looked forward to earlier. I mean, I get that there has to be a huge conflict. For us to eventually see the hero redeeming himself in the end. But Corbin just fell short to me. Even to the end. Aside from him breaking up with the heroine again and again, he took her for granted way too long for me to really respect or admire him. His come to Jesus moment wayyyy too late in the book. And for Ruby to suck it up constantly and forgive him every time he ditches her.... because she rather have any piece of him than none at all was CRAZY. I would have shown him the door long ago. Throughout the book, they use their silly games of triple dares just to get one up the other and hide their true feelings. It was annoying and just bogged down the story as I needed to see more of their relationship pan out. Not seeing them playing dare games to outdo the other. Leave the games to Rye and Brin, they are the king and queen of pranks. It fits with their story and relationship. In here, it was like a plot device just to dragged out the big "talk" they should've had 6 years ago. When he royally screwed up. Ruby gave Corbin way too many passes in this book but I suppose the fifth time's the charm. But for me, it was wasted years of waiting on a guy to finally "man the hell up". Corbin just didn't measure up to the other heroes. I really hated whenever he ran out on her and she forgives him so easily. Especially in the last one when he abandoned her and dumped her via text. He bailed yet again when things got rough. By the time he was willing to fight for her, I already grew tired of his b.s. and just exasperated with the secret box. Just end the misery already.

Parts that I did enjoy about the book was revisiting the whole gang and catching up with their lives (Wren & Rye, u the most!). Love that we still get the humor, the deep love and friendship that remained strong throughout each book. I only wish we have more scenes of Corbin and Ruby developing their relationship in a realistic way aside from the triple daring games. Yes, I get that it was their "Thing". But the way their relationship transitioned from games to sex real quick was just unfulfilling and anticlimactic.

I still think C.M. Owen is an amazing author and capable of writing some great possessively devoted heroes (minus Corbin). So I'll probably continue on to the next as I desperately want to read Britt's book.

Shaking that Ass.....

Triple Dare:

This book absolutely broke me in so many emotional ways.
Corbin is such a mystery to everyone on the outside he is the quiet on who is always there to listen to anyone but never shares his feelings instead he kept them bottled up to himself and writing out his emotions on paper and storing them in his secret box.
Ruby is a character who I absolutely adored; she is strong willed and anyone not close to her thinks she is tough and almost bitch like. Ruby is adored by her father who saved her being an attention device (so to speak) by her manipulative mother when being hospitalized numerous times from her life threatening nut allergy.
Together Ruby and Corbin were complete, but without each other they both were broken and this book definitely BROKE me in the most heart wrenching beautiful way possible. I was literally snot ball crying….. Corbin passed out in Ruby’s entry way, Corbin digging up all his boxes (through tiled floor), reading Corbin’s entries completely Broke me, it was gut wrenching and tore my heart apart…. Yes i was snot ball crying again. Those boxes ripped my heart open and heartbreak of losing not only the love of their life but also losing a best friend.
Laugh out loud moments were also a huge stand out with fairies have to be sparkly, spray cheese girl, Corbin the closet chick flick lover, looks like you don’t “manscape” now and Banana girl….Shake that Ass
The vibrating panties had me in hysterics, so did the brownies scene!!! My brother is marrying my sister was absolute genius!! While there are so many hilarious scenes throughout this book with all the Triple Dares I Flove the fact that this book has so much emotion and tore my heart to absolute shreds.
Cm Owens always out does herself and never disappoints, truly amazing book on so many levels!! Thank you so much for an Amazing read!!!

The Sterling Shore series is one of my favorite series ever

The Sterling Shore series is one of my favorite series ever. These stories get better and better with every one i read. You would think there would be some kind of repeat by now but nope!! This author is so awesome she keeps dreaming up new stuff!!!

This is Corbin Sterling and Ruby Cross' story. Corbin has always been the ladies man of the Sterling boys always flitting around with different girls and doing silly stuff with his cousins and getting arrested. He's always appeared to not have a care in the world and to be honest up till now we've not really seen much of him. This is his story and you realize that anything you thought you knew was completely wrong and was only a shallow surface he hid behind. He's been friends with Ruby since they were kids. Always best friends sticking together but in all honesty he kinda always walked all over Ruby and she gave in to his every need. You would think being like this you would feel Ruby is weak. She is anything but weak believe me the only person she bows to is Corbin but trust me she gets him back plenty in their Triple Dares i'll just say Twerk and leave it at that. Once you read you'll know!

This book takes you on a massive roller-coaster of emotions. From the start there is an undercurrent to the book that slowly reveals what is under the surface. The highs are just awesome the Triple Dares had me crying laughing and of course if there are dares and pranks going on previous characters Brin and Rye have to be in them! The constant undercurrent makes you feel a little tense and really unsure that it will turn out ok in the end. I got pretty scared there for a while they would not end up together. The chemistry between them is off the charts but something or someone keeps getting in the way or Corbin screws up spectacularly. The scene after Corbin accidentally drinks her dads beer is probably one of the funniest things i have ever read. probably the most sexy too. But then come the lows. I can happily admit that i cried for the last quarter of the book. It had built and built highs and lows, lows and highs and then, then everything just explodes!! I had gone through the book in all honesty wanting to smack Corbin round the head and tell him he was an idiot and should grow up!! Then... then he breaks... something comes out that just breaks him from the inside out. I gotta say i broke there right alongside him, shattered in fact. I had also spent the book falling in love with Ruby and broke for her too. It was an amazing twist in the book and i blubbed my eyes out so much i had to keep stopping so i could see!

After being shattered into a million pieces i was put back together and made to feel whole again. The ending left me feeling very satisfied i just loved every single second of the whole book.

I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone. It can be read as a standalone but you would so be missing out by not reading the rest of the series. Shot straight to the top of my favorite books ever!!!

A witty yet cautionary tale to entertain and enlighten screenwriters and Hollywood hopefuls

As a long-time Hollywood script reader for major film companies and agencies, I enjoyed Adam Novak's wry (but all too true) approach to the inside story of a film director and agency "script guru." With a long tenure at one of Hollywood's top agencies himself, Novak knows the score. My favorite sections were his pseudo-coverage comments, and I learned a few fresh "reader-wit" turns of phrase to use in any future coverage I might write! Thanks, Adam, for a peek behind the curtain which educates as well as entertains.

Strange Little Beast of a Novella

This is a strange little beast of a novella in the form of a transcript of an unaired podcast documenting a conversation between an A-list Hollywood agency story guru, and a D-list screenwriter turned adjunct writing instructor. As a kind of freewheeling insider's view of how Hollywood actually works, it's pretty interesting. But the transcript is also dotted with references to an unsolved murder, which by the end of the story, is solved. I guess you kind of need that gimmick to make it more than just the author -- himself, a veteran Hollywood story guy -- sharing a peek behind the movie magic curtain. The book is really about the lowly "readers" who are tasked with reading piles of screenplays and writing 1-page "coverage" for each, indicating quality, commercial potential, and how it could fit into the agency or studio's plans. Think of them as the triage nurses of the Hollywood battlefield. Although entertainingly written, your level of enjoyment of all this is going to largely depend on your level of interest in how the movie sausage gets made. I found it compelling enough that the murder element didn't really add anything other than a reason for the rambling industry tales to come to an end.

To the parents of eleven-year-old Tyler Paquette, the family of Mexican workers who have come to live in the trailer on their Vermont dairy farm are angels.

Tyler had actually seen the tractor roll over, trapping his father underneath. He's had horrible nightmares about it ever since. If Tyler had not been there to call 9-1-1, his father wouldn't be alive today. Nevertheless, his father may never recover the full use of his arm and leg and -- given that Tyler's big brother is heading off to college at the end of the summer and his teenage sister is about as likely to help with the cows as my teenage daughter is to help me tend to my dairy goats (NOT!) -- it had been looking like Tyler might never have the opportunity to grow up to become a fifth-generation Vermont family farmer.

"I remember the fear of serpents, the sharp rocks, the lights of la migra. And always, the terrible thirst...I am not sure even this paper can hold such terrifying memories."

Mari is Tyler's age. She is an illegal alien. She has arrived on a bus from North Carolina with her illegal alien father, her two illegal alien uncles, and her two little sisters who were born in North Carolina. Last winter Mari's mom suddenly returned to their homeland in southern Mexico because her mother -- Mari's Abulita -- was dying. Now the family has lost contact with Mama who is hopefully still alive and presumably still trying to sneak across the border and return to North Carolina.

Fearing potential repercussions, Mari's father has persuaded her not to try to actually mail any of the long letters that she has been writing to Mama. But how, then, might the family ever become reunited?

"That is why I am writing, Mama. Not only to tell you where we are moving to, but also because I have nowhere else to put the things that are in my heart. As you always used to tell Papa when he found you writing letters, or just writing in a notebook, 'El papel lo aguanta todo.' Paper can hold anything. Sorrows that might otherwise break your heart. Joys with wings that lift you above the sad things in your life."

Told from the perspectives of Tyler and Mari -- two sixth graders living on a dairy farm in small town Vermont in 2005 -- RETURN TO SENDER is a story of families and hope and opportunities offered by the country I love and am sometimes so proud of -- and opportunities withheld by the country I often haven't understood and have sometimes been embarrassed by.

Why is it that it is a crime for one of these sixth graders to have been born in Mexico? How will it affect things for Tyler to be classmates with Mari, to be in the position of knowing Mari is an illegal alien and -- at the same time -- to recognize that his future as a farmer is so dependent on keeping knowledge of that legal status well hidden? When is it okay -- even admirable -- to participate in breaking laws and when have American heroes participated in doing so?

On the lighter side, RETURN TO SENDER frequently plays with language -- illustrating repeatedly how literal translations of English to Spanish or Spanish to English can lead to amusing misunderstandings.

Just in the past couple of weeks, I have perceived a heightening of fear-based anger related to the economic woes facing so many of us. During an era of panic and fear, a book that so vividly and lovingly illustrates how diverse families are far more similar than they are are different is particularly welcome and essential.

Look into the Heavens

Julia Alvarez knows how to characterize the blur in the line between right and wrong. She knows how to make it clear that reality and morality are continuums and not dichotomies of this or that, up or down, or yes or no. There are no absolutes. (Now, there's an oxymoron.) We have a long way to go.

Alvarez begins with a young man, her protagonist, Tyler, the younger eleven-year-old son in a family who has survived and thrived by running a dairy farm in Vermont. The family's farming heritage is at risk. Tyler's older brother is away at college, mostly unavailable to help out on the farm without jeopardizing his education and eventual career, and Tyler's father has been injured and disabled, perhaps permanently, in a farming accident. Tyler's father can't do the work he normally did. It is unclear when and if he ever will be able to do the work again. Extended family also can't adequately help out. So paying the bills and keeping the farm is at risk. The family needs help or to change their dynamics: selling the farm, moving from their land, doing something entirely different than farming.

Tyler's parents eventually hire undocumented immigrants --- a couple of men --- to assist with the dairy work. One of the immigrant men is married and has three daughters. The oldest, Mari, slowly becomes Tyler's friend and ally, an unfolding as miraculous as springtime. Mari's mother has disappeared in the murky criminal element that arose to fulfill the void created by ambiguities in United States immigrant policies, underfunded policies that for years tacitly approved of undocumented immigrants coming to the United States to work in jobs that citizens in better times didn't want to do.

The analysis of various notions is tenderly at play in Alvarez's book:
What is a family?
What does it mean to be honest?
What good is it to have a law without compassion, or without implementing it and adequately funding its substantial enforcement?
What does it mean to be a good neighbor and a friend?
What sacrifices are appropriate and necessary of good neighbors and friends? And does all of that that apply only to individuals and not to communities and to nations?
What is charity? Is it a weakness or strength?
What about religion and the mystical, and gazing into the heavens? Hope?

"... life is about change, change, and more change. 'When you're born as a child, you die as a baby. Just like when you're born as a teenager, you die as a child.'... 'But there are good sides even to bad or sad things happening,' my mom reminds me...."

This is a coming of age adventure where a boy and a girl have more love and compassion than the men and the women do, where a couple of families have greater diplomacy toward each other than the greatest nations on earth do for each other. So it would be good to take their advice and look into the heavens and contemplate the beauty of the night before flying apart.

A timely book for young people (and the not-so-young

I want to disclose that I know the author, but only slightly, and I lived for many years in both Middlebury and Bridport, Vermont. (Bridport is often called Bridgeport by out-of-staters passing through.) So when I see an acknowledgment to Jerry and Cheryl Connor, who own a large and beautiful farm in Bridport, I know I am in once familiar territory. But those were years ago. Today I live in Miami Beach where Spanish dominates English. So let me begin by saying one of the biggest pluses is how skillfully Dr. Alvarez has incorporated Spanish into the text. It reads so smoothly and should be very inviting to those who do not speak Spanish. And in my opinion, Spanish is a beautiful language to hear. (I also teach writing at a local college. Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, so unlike what my classrooms were like in Vermont.)
The characters are delightful. When I grew up in Vermont, it was French-Canadians who populated the migrant farm workers. Maybe today there are more Mexicans. This I would not know. But the story is believable and takes the reader through the complete annual cycle of a farm.
However, I could not give this the fifth star for one reason. I have taught all my adult life. Maria's letters are not the letters of a girl her age. I think children and young adults reading this would not object. But as an adult reader--and a voracious one--I don't like having to suspend my belief system for an entire novel. And that is what I had to do because those letters back home to the absent mother in Mari's life are too perfect, letters that a more mature Mari would have composed. Having said that, I realize that the standards for young adult fiction are different than those for adult fiction.
I really wish this book would find its way into hundreds and hundreds of classrooms, probably grade six through eight. This really is a political book--and I am pleased it is.
Now I am wondering if Dr. Alvarez might be writing, say, about a young girl, born in Puerto Rico, who grows up in Brooklyn and becomes a latina woman on the Supreme Court. I might change my mind about young adult Sonia Sotomayor's letters to someone. I suspect she would have written brilliant prose and lengthy too.

great study of Neal Schon and Journey guitar work

I've been a big fan of Neal Schon's guitar prowess and Journey's AOR radio-friendly rock for many years. As a guitarist, I love Neal's soaring, fluid, effortless yet powerful style. He is a true guitar hero, sometimes overshadowed by the pop leanings and power ballads of his band. If you're looking to explore the guitar techniques and absorb the well-crafted chords of some of Journey's biggest hits, this is a great book. Like all of the Guitar Anthology Series books I have seen, this is acurate tab with clear layout in an easily read format.

From the author of Approximate Dynamic Programming

For anyone looking for an introduction to classic discrete state, discrete action Markov decision processes this is the last in a long line of books on this theory, and the only book you will need. The presentation covers this elegant theory very thoroughly, including all the major problem classes (finite and infinite horizon, discounted reward, average reward). The presentation is rigorous, and while it will be best appreciated by doctoral students and the research community, most of the presentation can be easily understood by a masters audience with a strong background in probability.

Discrete state, discrete action models have seen limited applications because of the well-known "curse of dimensionality." This field has perhaps been best known for its ability to identify theoretical properties of models and algorithms (the book has a nice presentation of monotone policies, for example). Excellent and detailed, although focusing on exact algorithms only

Anyone working with Markov Decision Processes should have this book. It has detailed explanations of several algorithms for MDPs: linear programming, value iteration and policy iteration for finite and infinite horizon; total-reward and average reward criteria, and there's one last chapter on continuous-time MDPs (SMDPs).

However, it does not cover some new ideas like partitioning and some faster approximated algorithms. But still, it is a great book!

You may also be interested in Bertsekas' "Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control", which covers similar material, but using a somewhat different approach

Susan Wittig Albert grew up on a farm in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. A former professor of English and a university administrator and vice president, she is the author of the China Bayles Mysteries, the Darling Dahlias Mysteries, and the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter. Some of her recent titles include Widow’s Tears, Cat’s Claw, The Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose, and The Tale of Castle Cottage. She and her husband, Bill, coauthor a series of Victorian-Edwardian mysteries under the name Robin Paige, which includes such titles as Death at Glamis Castle and Death at Whitechapel.

Cute historical cozy - if you don't mind talking animals

"The Tale of Castle Cottage" is a fictional story based on true events in the life of children's author Beatrix Potter. Beatrix is in the process of renovating Castle Cottage where she and her fiancé Will Heelis will live after they are married, if Beatrix's parents ever give the couple their blessing. Even if that occurs, they may not have a place to live since the renovations are taking an extraordinary amount of time, possibly due to thievery on the part of the contractor. Does the crooked contractor have anything to due with other thefts, ranging from a tin of tea to a rare book, that are going on in the village? As Beatrix decides to get to the bottom of the thefts and the construction delays, someone else undertakes a separate investigation into the thefts - Crumpet, a gray tabby cat.

"The Tale of Castle Cottage" is an unusual book. It is part historical fiction and part fictionalized biography. In addition, to tie into the real Beatrix Potter's animal stories for children, the animals in the story talk to each other about all the events occurring in the village. While this is the first book I have read in this series, I've enjoyed several other books by this author. This book is written in Ms. Albert's usual excellent style, and the portions covering the historical background of the author and the village are wonderful. I am okay with Beatrix's pets occasionally commenting on the discussions going on between Beatrix and her friends to add a bit of charm to the book. However, later when entire chapters are devoted to the lives of the animals and parties they are planning, I began to lose interest. I am an animal lover and am able to suspend belief when reading a fictional story; I have enjoyed several cozies featuring crime-solving and magical cats and dogs. However, it is distracting for me to be immersed in life in a 1913 English village, and then switch to animals discussing their picnic plans or concerns about a gang of criminal rats.

While there are many imaginative scenes with the animals, the author's descriptions of the current state of Beatrix's homes Hill Top Farm and Castle Cottage remind the reader that Beatrix and Will are real people and that many of the places in the book are also real. These excellent scenes make you want to hop on a plane and visit the quaint village of Sawrey. I love the author's historical notes at the end of the story, which give context to the book and help clarify which parts of the story are fictional and which really happened. The recipes for some of the dishes mentioned in the story that were popular during the era in which the book is set are another nice touch.

Susan Wittig Albert is a wonderful author, and I appreciate the research she has done to make the historical details of the book so accurate. Much of the book is entertaining, but while it is a cute mystery and romantic love story of Beatrix Potter and Will Heelis, the whimsy of the talking animals is too fanciful for me. However, if you don't mind a bit of Rita Mae and Sneaky Pie Brown mixed in with your historical fiction, then you may find this book to your liking. It just isn't my cup of tea.

great historical cozy

In the summer of1913, Beatrix Potter is currently residing at Hill Top Farm in the Lake District while working on her latest story The Tale of Pigling Bland. She admits to her publisher that her eight drawings are not that good as Beatrix still recovers from her recent illness in which she lived with her parents at their domicile in Kensington. As she works on her latest novel, Beatrix also oversees the renovation of her new home that she and her fiancé solicitor William Heelis will move into once Mr. Biddle finishes the Castle Cottage improvements and they are married (in spite of the doubts of her parents).

While the author struggles with her new work, the locals of nearby Near Sawrey begin to misplace items ranging in value from baked goods to money to family heirlooms. Her friend Sarah Barwick believes she is the victim of a thief, but fears it is someone she knows. However that pales in comparison to the death of carpenter Lewis Adcock who was just fired by Biddle. Beatrix and Will end up investigating the thefts, the death and Biddle's lack of commitment to the castle Cottage renovation.

The eighth Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter (see The Tale of Oat Cake Crag) is a great historical cozy that brings to life the Lake District just prior to WWI. The story line is a wonderful entertaining tale as once again Susan Wittig Albert combines Ms. Potter's real life, the fables of the animals who dominate her tales and an enjoyable amateur sleuth into a delightful story.

Is eight really enough?

What a joy! What a true literary joy it is to return to the Land between the Lakes, to visit the Victorian-Age households owned by children's author Beatrix Potter, and to eavesdrop on the everyday conversations of the people and the animals of the area. The books in this Cottage Tales series always offer a welcome respite from the complex cares of 21st-century life.

This episode has multiple plotlines to follow. The year is 1913, and Miss Potter has arranged for some construction to be done on her second major property, the Castle Farm. The job seems to cost more and to take longer than she ever anticipated, however. She's got to look into that matter, and perhaps request the aid of her fiancé, Will Heelis, in remedying the situation. (Speaking of Will: will the couple EVER get married? Or will family disdain and interference get the better of both of them?) In the meantime, the community appears to be on the edge of a full-fledged invasion by some nasty rats. It may be up to the neighborhood animals to deal with these rodent-thieves, who are robbing the humans of both trinkets and edibles. Add to these problems the sudden death of a good man, and all of the inhabitants must stop to consider the reasons and the ramifications of the act. It is indeed a busy time in this otherwise bucolic English landscape.

This historical fiction/cozy mystery distinguishes itself by being based on the story of a real-life author, told in the style that she herself used while writing her own Peter Rabbit tales. The text is replete with marvelous humor and delightful turns of phrase. (Example from page 99: "[Dimity] had ended up in the arms of Christopher Kittredge -- well, one arm, since the fellow, a war hero, had left the other with the Boers.") Yes, there are talking animals (and if you can't handle those italicized asides, then you'd best not pick up any volume in this series). There's also a personal narrator, who at times feels free to politely intrude and to interrupt the action to approach the reader directly and to offer inside observations. You might have to "suspend your disbelief" a bit; but when you do, all of these elements add up to much merry reading.

This time the additional explanatory material supplied by the author at the book's conclusion very neatly ties every loose end and supplies a worthy wrap-up of Beatrix's biography. Can we handle the fact that this eighth installment is the LAST ONE in the run? Susan Wittig Albert's writing continues with several other mystery series, so she obviously has other non-Beatrix Potter tales to tell. I certainly wish her well in all of her endeavors. But I can't help feeling a small sense of loss that we'll have no more new adventures from Bea, Will, Rascal, Crumpet, Bosworth, Hyacinth, and all of the rest. And what, no more Badger Rules of Thumb?!? Bye-bye, Near and Far Sawrey. Our time together has indeed been both fun and educational.
