PAUL HAS A TRUE GIFT!

A few months ago, I was laying in bed scrolling thru Facebook just dreading to start my day. The job I loved for the last 3 years had finally become every other job I had- awful. But this time, it hit a whole new low. I was really miserable. The stress got so bad that I was having chest pains and was calling out sick because I couldn't go in and deal with all the pressure. As I was scrolling thru Facebook that morning, I came across your posting in my newsfeed from a friend who shared your post. It was the post w/the picture of the wolf. It said, 'Throw Me To The Wolves and I Will Return Leading the Pack.' It really grabbed me. I saved a picture of your posting to my phone and told myself that I would reference back to it thru out the day anytime I needed some encouragement. It got me thru the next few days. I then began to follow your page. And then I followed your advice and words of encouragement.
I reached out to a friend who really enjoyed the company she worked for. She said they were hiring and I also found out that the manager was a good acquaintance that I knew from a previous employer. By the end of the NEXT day, her and I had spoke and she offered me the job right over the phone! While I know I was fortunate to have the job basically fall in my lap, I do understand that it wouldn't have happened at all if I hadn't said 'yes' to taking a small step to look for another job!
I ordered your book and workbook. I've been reading in the evenings after I get home from work. I can't tell you how excited I am by both. About the Author

Margot Norton is Associate Curator at the New Museum, New York, where she has recently curated and co-curated exhibitions with artists Judith Bernstein, Pia Camil, Sarah Charlesworth, Roberto Cuoghi, Ragnar Kjartansson, Chris Ofili, Laure Prouvost, and Erika Vogt, as well as the group exhibitions “Here and Elsewhere” and “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star.” Norton is currently working on a solo exhibition with Goshka Macuga, which will open at the New Museum in May 2016.

Wakelin can trace the influence of humanism much earlier than was thought, because he examines evidence in manuscripts and early printed books of the English study and imitation of antiquity, in polemical marginalia on classical works, and in the ways in which people copied and shared classical works and translations. He also examines how various English works were shaped by such reading habits and, in turn, how those English works reshaped the reading habits of the wider community. Humanism thus, contrary to recent strictures against it, appears not as 'top-down' dissemination, but as a practical process of give-and-take between writers and readers. Humanism thus also prompts writers to imagine their potential readerships in ways which challenge them to re-imagine the political community and the intellectual freedom of the reader. Our views both of the fifteenth century and of humanist literature in English are transformed.

Not really a review, more of a tip.

I have wanted to read "Lolita" for years. The most useful advice I can give to someone else considering making this puchase, would be to consider buying "The Annotated Lolita." I bought a copy listed as "complete and unabridged" because i was afraid another copy would be edited. It is a controversial book after all. I didnt want to get an abridged version. There are many foreign passages in this book that went over my head. I was unable to find a website devoted to all the interpertations I needed for "Lolita." I was forced to chose between taking a break from reading to google search passages as I came across them, or to skim over them when I was too engrossed to put down the book.
Spare yourself from this hassle and just buy "The Annotated Lolita."

Think you have a problem

I choose this book to read because it was on everyone's Top Ten or Top Twenty must read books. If you are going to read this book and you don't speak or understand French, get an academically notated version. There are many French words and passages, that a lot of the book is lost. You might also want to keep an English language dictionary handy because there are so many archaic words used that even an educated person will have to look up a couple hundred of them. The book deals with obsession to the extreme. I can see why the the book was so controversial when it first came out. Pedophilia is the the only thing that is still Taboo in the American culture and as it should be. The damage done to the psyche of a person molested at an early age is a life long struggle.

Simply amazing

It should be impossible to make a book told from the vantage point of a child molester compulsively readable, but Nabokov manages to do just that. The book is not about sex (or rape, since Lolita is underage, though that does occurs in the story (never explicitly described)). It's about obsession, moral blindness, and loss, and maybe even about redemption, after a fashion. It is so spectacularly well-written that's it's mind boggling that English was Nabokov's third language. In addition, the prose is fiendishly clever, but never obscure. The book loses nothing if you don't catch any of the subtle clues and hidden meanings in the writing (I missed most of them the first time I read the book); it just gives you an opportunity to read this gem of a novel again, and get as much satisfaction out of it as you did the first time. True literary genius is hard to come by. Don't let this one slip through your fingers.
