While major collections of 'art' photography have grown in status and visibility, photographs not designated 'art' are often invisible in museums. Yet almost every museum has photographs as part of its ecosystem, gathered as information, corroboration or documentation, shaping the understanding of other classes of objects, and many of these collections remain uncatalogued and their significance unrecognised.

This volume presents a series of case studies on the historical collecting and usage of photographs in museums. Using critically informed empirical investigation, it explores substantive and historiographical questions such as what is the historical patterning in the way photographs have been produced, collected and retained by museums? How do categories of the aesthetic and evidential shape the history of collecting photographs? What has been the work of photographs in museums? What does an understanding of photograph collections add to our understanding of collections history more broadly? What are the methodological demands of research on photograph collections?

The case studies cover a wide range of museums and collection types, from art galleries to maritime museums, national collections to local history museums, and international perspectives including Cuba, France, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK. Together they offer a fascinating insight into both the history of collections and collecting, and into the practices and poetics of archives across a range of disciplines, including the history of science, museum studies, archaeology and anthropology.

This present volume (letters 218-390) is noteworthy for its large collection of letters to a non-ecclesiastical audience, and because it contains letters not just to such high-ranking notables as Frederick Barbarossa, King Henry II of England, or Eleanor or Acquitaine, but also to common, ordinary individuals of no importance whatsoever, save that they received a letter from Hildegard of Bingen. Addressing matters as diverse as the "humors" and their relation to health and salvation, the fate of departed souls, the frequency and horror of homicide in her age, a means of exorcising malignant spirits, an effective kind of incantation to alleviate nightmares, the proper attitude and response to the fact of excommunication, and male infidelity in marriage, Hildegard provides a unique view of the twelfth century world. Here also are found compositions in epistolary style that are actually sermons, mediations, prayers, or treatises on a wide range of theological topics, such as prophecy, celebration of the Mass, the Lord's Prayer, the creation, and the fall of Adam. Like previous volumes, the translation follows the most recent definitive Latin text, in which the letters are organized according to the rank and station of Hildegard's correspondents.

Here, in the third volume of a three volume set
is the translation of the written correspondence
between Hildegard of Bingen and many of her contemporaries.
Included among her pen pals are some of the most well-known
figures in history.

If you have any interest in Medieval history
and Christian theology/philosophy,
these letters from one of the greatest Christian mystics,
spiritual masters, theologians, artists, musicians
and intellectuals of all time must be included in your library.
You will read it again and again.

It is the kind of book that is hard to stop reading.
Because the letters are short, you can sample the book
for only a few minutes at a time.

A visionary, having received private revelations
from God from the age of five years,
she kept them mostly to herself until in her 40's
when instructed by the Pope to share them.
Many of her letters contain revelations that may not
be recorded elsewhere. How cool is that!

Unfortunately, all three volumes of her letters
in the English translation are out of print.

About the Author
Mary Shelley was born in 1797, the only daughter of writers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. In 1814 she eloped with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, whom she married in 1816. that this is NOT the original story needs to be made much clearer in the description - lots of issues when your student uses this book as their own in which to underline rather than the class copy in which they cannot underline - to find there are lots of differences! VERY disappointing

Great! Classic read with vocabulary component.

This is a great classic literature book and the vocabulary study is simply a bonus component. Also, it is convenient to build your vocabulary while reading a great book because to have your child sit with a dictionary beside them to look up words they may not fully know interrupts the story line, but this allows them to get the exact definition on the spot rather than having them use only context to determine the definition.

It's our first Score-Raising Classic

The first SAT Score-Raising Classic we bought but if it goes well, we will buy more. Contrary to some of the reviews of other score-raising classics, this DOES have bolded words, so it's easy to find the SAT words in context and the glossary for each is right there. Hopefully, this will help make SAT studying fun and we'll get others. It's reading a class and getting more out of it at the same time.

I have been involved for many years teaching pharmacology to medical,dental, nurse students and I really appreciate that Dr Brenner is able to summarize the most important topics of general pharmacology as well as the most important features of every family of drugs.
I think this textbook is very helpful for our students of medicine as well as those studying Dentistry,and allied sciences of health .Hopefully in the next future this book should be translated to spanish for our students, here in South America.

Oustanding

I agree completely with the other reviewers; this is a best-in-class book that will become a "classic" over time. While it is at the top of its game for its knowledge and insight, it also is an easy, laid back read. For at least five years, I've been hearing about Go To Market Strategies but no one has defined what it means yet, or tried to. When you see the cover of this book, you think "Of course. It is about time someone wrote this book". Once you go inside the covers, you will be pleased. The best endorsement I can give is that I am buying a copy for each of my 41 direct reports. Author Larry Friedman offers a clear and practical framework for going to market, which involves choosing the right markets, channels, products, customers, and value propositions to increase growth and profits. This approach is supported by scores of examples. The examples are of real companies with real problems, not the usual "In Search Of Excellence" best practice stories that are happy-face fairy tales for the most part. The whole book was well informed from cover to cover. The most important chapters were the Ten Commandments Of Going To Market, and Targeting The Right Markets, which is the soundest and best description of market evaluation and selection techniques anyplace. That chapter must be why the book got such a strong endorsement from Kotler, the Marketing Guru. If there is a weakness in this book, it is the chapter on products. While the discussion of product development as part of a market strategy overhaul is OK, the author's strength is in marketing and channels, not product development. On the other hand, he does have a few provocative things to say about product design. The author's reputation preceeding this book is as a channel strategist, and for the large parts of the book that concerns sales and marketing channels, he does not disappoint. It is brutally evident here that he knows more about channels and partner distribution than anyone else today, period. Go To Market Strategy is an Internet Mania Free Zone, with a sane and balanced view point on the role of the Internet in an overall marketing strategy. You will enjoy his description of the Pets.com debacle. I almost fell out of my chair laughing at his irreverent(and dead-accurate) analysis of why Pets.com failed. He also has an irreverent and cynical view point about marketing consultants, a group he acknowledges belonging to. You get the impression that the author has a sense of humor about the whole thing. That is very refreshing and reason in itself to buy this book. Also, make sure you read every footnote. They're like the bonus materials on a DVD movie. A few are standard references, but many have extra information and insight, and they are kind of a running commentary on the main body of the text.

Excellent book on marketing strategy - a must read!!!

I just purchased a copy of this book, and read it cover to cover in one sitting (although it is about 300 pages). This appears to be the "follow up" book to author Lawrence Friedman's last book The Channel Advantage (a copy of which is dog-eared and worn to the binding in my personal library). This book has some similarities to The Channel Advantages, but some big differences too. Like The Channel Advantage, it is witty and interesting with a sense of humor lacking in most business books, I really enjoy this author's books. Also, it shows a street wise, very practical understanding of the sales and marketing issues faced by both large and small companies. It has dozens of case studies and interesting (and clever) examples of companies in many different markets. Where Go To Market Strategy differs from the author's last book is the content. Go To Market Strategy is a much more strategic and all-inclusive book -something like, every sales and marketing issue you face in taking your products to customers. At first you think, the author bites off so much content, can he (and you) chew it, but it is all digestible and a few hundred pages later, you "get it". The book's theme or argument is twofold. First, to "go to market" with a product or service successfully, you must execute five very interrelated activities: selection of the right market(s), identification of customers' core needs, the right channels mix, the best product design, and development of a strong (compelling) sales message. Second, everything you do in going to market must be organized around the needs and desires of customers. While not exactly a new idea, the author does a very nice job of providing helpful tools and practical ideas to get aligned with customers and meet them on their own terms. In fact, this book is one of the few to say something useful and new, and non-cliche'd, about focusing on the customer and the role that customers must play in your go to market efforts.
For ...Minimally, it will give you a plethora of tools, concepts and ways to think about increasing sales at a lower cost. But you may get a lot more than that out of the book - a total systematic approach to use when launching new products and sales campaigns.

Great marketing book

This is a great marketing book. No hype and no b.s., just a lot of sound, practical ideas for connecting better with your customers and doing more business with them. The theoretical ideas are very well supported by practical advice and what must be 25 or 30 useful cases examples from Corporate America (and Europe - some Asian examples would have been nice too). I thought the chapters on choosing markets and aligning with customers were especially well written and useful. I also thought the part on value propositions was eye opening and likely to lead more than a few executives to rethink whether they really have a winning message. For a marketing book, you always have to wonder whether it's serious or if it's just a bunch of stupid McKinsey 2x2 matrices. This book is one of the rare ones that trades in all those tired "cash cow" pedantics for practical, sales-oriented advice. So I give this book a solid 5 stars because I don't know what more you could want from a marketing book. Finally, the two chapters on channels are detailed, complete, well written, and full of important post dot-bomb ideas for building a new channel strategy. These two chapters alone would be well worth the cost of the book.

The stories about people at the top of their industries for innovation,cultivating talent & hiring practices are interesting.

I purchased this book after watching Sydney Finkelstein in an interview on one of the local Sunday morning business programs. I listened to Mr. Finkelstein speak about the qualities that great innovators and employers have in common and I knew I needed to get the book.

One thing that I found really interesting about Mr. Finkelstein's book is that no matter what industry you work, there are similar qualities in "Superbosses."

Mr. Finkelstein uses real life examples ranging from the newspaper industry, Ralph Lauren, Oracle, and chef's from restaurant's like Chez Panisse to define what a Superboss is and does.

Whether you are looking at the book because you are interested in data and research or you want to be a Superboss this is worth reading.

Mr. Finkelstein doesn't use a lot of jargon and he doesn't use a million big words, he gets to the point and his stories about people he considers at the top of their industries for innovation cultivating talent and hiring practices are very interesting.

This definitely will stay on my bookshelf and be highly recommended.

A peak into the lives of other leaders.

Good summaries on what makes a boss or a SUPER BOSS! Not my favorite read but one that give s little insight to other leaders lives. Author gets a little too political in the book for my taste but if you want a peak into leaders of major corporations this book would be worth a read.

I would recommend to anyone looking to improve their leadership skills.

A familys' responsiblity for the shaping of society.

When people wonder why people turn in to who they are and form the society in wth which we live this book will help clarify things for them. If one wants a deep look at society's ills and its being formed by families, Christopher Lasch presents a very good insight, that for reasons of accuracy may not make everyone happy.

A Prelude to The Culture of Narcissism

In The Culture of Narcissism, Christopher Lasch mentions the importance of Haven in a Heartless World as a prelude document. Among other things, Lasch attributes the culture of narcissism to an attempt by various social agencies, academics, health professionals and bureaucrats to create space for themselves by proposing ways of solving problems that are ultimately unsolvable. We begin our lives with a sense of loss, the world being a colder and more difficult place than the warmth and freedom from responsibility afforded by the womb. Enter the professional nurturers who will build careers for themselves by promising to remedy that sense of loss through their various ministrations (which, once applied, prove to be more problematic than the ills they have purported to cure).

Haven in a Heartless World looks at the displacement of family responsibility by such individuals. Beginning in the nineteenth century, Lasch works his way forward principally through the study of sociological literature, most of which he finds radically wanting. While I agree with Lasch's critics that he spends less time articulating his own advice and principles than one might wish, his command of the literature at his disposal is very, very impressive. Haven in a Heartless World does not utilize the broad cultural materials of The Culture of Narcissism but it is an important step on the way to Lasch's major book.

While not inaccessible to general readers, Haven in a Heartless World will be of particular interest to sociologists and other social scientists. It remains relevant today, even though it appeared over three decades ago.

Compelling social commentary

Compelling social commentary, and brilliantly written, perhaps not surprising since Lasch was not a social scientist, but rather a professor of English Literature, at Columbia if I recall right, but in any case, at one of the Ivy League colleges. Lasch became interested in social trends, and ended up writing this fine book on the decline and destruction of the family in American life. Although the book is 20 years old at this point, Lasch's ideas are if anything more relevant now than they were back in the 70's.
