This unusual collaboration brings together the Way (the Tao) and the Work, Katie's form of self-inquiry and path to joy. Katie is the author of Loving What Is, and Mitchell, the noted translator of the Tao, is her husband. In each chapter of this new book, Mitchell has presented Katie with a passage from the Tao and noted down her exposition on the theme. (This oral format can result in choppy, repetitive text.) Katie's own "awakening" came in 1986, after 10 years of depression. One morning she felt a sense of freedom from her overwhelming distress, a feeling she calls "a falling-away of the self." Several years ago, Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life by Byron Katie hit the bestseller list and introduced thousands of people to The Work. Katie then took readers further into this simple, but profound, process in her book I Need Your Love--Is That True?, whereby Katie invited individuals to question everything they say, do or think in order to secure love, approval, or appreciation from others.

Now, in the book A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are, Katie provides an intimate glimpse into a subject that she doesn't normally talk about--her everyday life. From babysitting her grandchild to experiencing painful corneal blisters, sipping a cup of tea to sitting with a dying friend, Katie show us The Work in action--and how she exquisitely inhabits a fluid world without boundaries or demarcation.

Teaming up with her author/translator husband Stephen Mitchell, Katie elaborates on short excerpts from the Tao Te Ching from her own unique standpoint. At core, Katie challenges us--and our most cherished beliefs--by reminding us that unquestioned thoughts are the source of all stress and suffering. No person, lack, diagnosis, death, accident, tsunami, war, or illness causes suffering--only our unquestioned thoughts about such things.

Granted, this idea is a radical one because, for Katie, reality equals what is, and reality is God and reality is always good. A Thousand Names for Joy reveals a sweet, guileless woman who is nevertheless an equal opportunity offender. When she relates the story about a well-known Buddhist teacher describing how appalled and devastated he felt on 9/11, Katie observes that "his suffering had nothing to do with the terrorists or the people who died...[he in that moment] was terrorizing his own mind, causing his own grief."

Katie also addresses Christians and the idea of "knowing Jesus". She says, "I know what it is to enter heaven and not look back, and I know the arrogance of thinking that people need to be saved. If I can walk into the light, so can you. You can't help us with your words: `There it is, over there. Follow me.' No. YOU do it first, then we'll follow. This savior thing is lethal."

At 280 pages, A Thousand Names for Joy reads like part memoir and part devotional--but 100% contrary to almost every book lining the bulging shelves of the Self-Help section. With The Work, individuals embrace everything and resist nothing, for resistance is not only futile, but the root of suffering. Physical pain, love, success, money, abuse, death--Katie address all these topics and more by showing what happens when our thoughts about such issues are met with understanding--and inquiry.

Here are but a few of my favorite passages that I highlighted in the book:

"It's not possible to have a problem without believing a prior thought. To notice this simple truth is the beginning of peace."

"Forgiveness is realizing that what you thought happened didn't. You realize that there was never anything to forgive, and that's what The Work makes evident. It has all just been a misunderstanding within you."

"When you try to be safe, you live your life being very, very careful, and you may wind up having no life at all."

"People will write off even the clearest, most loving person in the world when he opposes their belief system. They will invalidate him, negate him, obliterate him, prove that he's wrong, he's a fraud, he's dangerous to society, so that they can protect what they really believe is important. They'd rather be right than free."

"If I think that I'm supposed to be doing anything but what I'm doing now, I'm insane."

"Of course, freedom doesn't mean that you let unkind things happen--it doesn't mean passivity or masochism. If someone says he's going to cut off your legs, run!"

At the end of A Thousand Names for Joy, Katie briefly describes the four questions of The Work, and provides the "Judge Your Neighbor" template from Loving What Is. She also points readers to her website, [...] for obtaining free worksheets for applying The Work to stressful thoughts.

A Thousand Names for Joy reveals what's on the other side of investigated thoughts--past the stress, the confusion, and the suffering. I am so grateful for The Work because it has helped me come to terms with my Autistic-spectrum son. Instead of meeting his "delays" with frustration and panic, I've been able to (mostly) meet him with patience, love, peacefulness, compassion and clarity.

If you have an affinity for the Tao Te Ching and would enjoy eavesdropping on Katie's wild (but entirely stress-free) world, then A Thousand Names for Joy will no doubt delight you. However, having used The Work for years--and having read all three of Katie's books--I feel that Loving What Is would serve those new to the process of inquiry better than A Thousand Names for Joy.

Why? Well, unless you're quite familiar with The Work, statements like "I see the common good. The common good looks like entire villages being wiped out by one tsunami" may seem disturbing, heartless, and repugnant. On the other hand, Katie would attest that such stressful thoughts would be the perfect time to apply The Work--but only if you want!

It's Blowing My Mind

"Loving What Is" changed my life. Now, six years later, the audio book of "A Thousand Names for Joy" is creating deeper change. Byron Katie's ability to explain how I can recognize my own connection with reality is unparalleled. Each section begins with Stephen Mitchell reading a passage from his translation of the Tao te Ching. Then Byron reads her explanation of and response to the passage. The insights are so amazing that I want to share them with everyone. The quality of the writing is more brilliant and poetic than in "Loving What Is." A familiarity with the earlier book will benefit the listener/reader, but is not absolutely necessary. Everyone who reads or listens to this book is making the world a better place simply by virtue of considering the ideas Byron presents. I can enjoy my stories without believing they are reality. Thank you, Byron Katie and Stephen Mitchell.

Classic great SciFi with a military theme braced by insightful essays on contemporary military issues. Buy it!

In a nutshell, Jerry Pournelle has collected a cornucopia of great military SciFi, fascinating military history and great current military analysis. It has something for everyone. The stories move quickly and draw the reader into the experience. A number of them left me ready to jump up and cheer for the good guys. Others seemed so prophetic and applicable to today and the near tomorrow that the writers must have a time machine hidden away. I will be thinking about a few of them for a long time.

Solid, well written, great characters and stories that put the fun back into science fiction. The history and opinion pieces are timely. This is a book you will read more then once.

Great read.

This is my first exposure to this series, and I find this installment intriguing. I found the preface of this book quite striking. As one who is not old enough to remember the end of the Cold War, let alone the period itself, the only perspective I have on either is the writings and recollections of those who write it. I do, however, vividly recollect 9/11, and wrote an opinion piece on the Iraq War for my school newspaper. Sadly, even both of these seem far and distant from the rise of ISIS and the current migrant crisis gripping the West. In light of this, whenever I see writings proclaiming the fall of the USSR to be "The End of History," I feel a mix of disgust and perhaps a bit of pity at their jubilantly naive claims to world peace. In contrast to the experiences of many of my generation, their wild claims seem a kind of cruel joke. As noted therein, there WILL be war... all that changes is how it is waged.

I found the non-fiction to be very insightful. In particular, the chapter on migration and war, written by the esteemed Martin van Creveld, was a take on migration that is not often seen today, and is perhaps the most important conversation that can be had in modern geopolitics. Two interesting topics also covered were the discussion of both light infantry and the importance of navies controlling littoral(shoreline) areas, which are more closely related than I would have otherwise thought. Both underline the fact that maximizing firepower often comes at the expense of essential aspects of a particular military action.

The fiction portion was a refreshing look at military SF. I admittedly do not read much in the way of that sub-genre, but I greatly enjoyed what I saw here. I felt a wide emotional range in reading the various stories. Some were funny, others grim; some were contemplative and gripping, others surreal and silly. My favorite stories were the ones centered around naval combat in space, of which there were several. The fiction selections created a sense of mystery, wonder, and at times apprehension, much to the credit of the authors.

Overall, I felt that the structuring of the various passages, both fiction and non-fiction, flowed in an intuitive way. In particular, a poem based on a work by Rudyard Kipling set the stage well for the fiction passage that followed. I am very much interested in reading the earlier volumes, and also look forward to future releases.

Great stories that will keep the pages turning

This book is an absolute blast. A collection of short stories all of which have a military sci-fi theme, the stories themselves trend towards the top in terms of writing and story telling. They run the gamut from being written in 2015 to having been first published in 1957 yet the writing is done so well that the age of some of the stories is not apparent and they feel fresh and crisp even today.
For me the real gems are the bits of non-fiction writing dispersed throughout the book. These nuggets of gold come from those who have a deep understanding of the challenges the modern world faces and they state their case for what they believe needs to be done in order for an advanced military to successfully meet those threats.
All in all this book is a great read and a lot of fun, I highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in either military or science fiction.

Gangsta Shyt

The book is definitely a five star even though it start off a little slow but don't stop reading because it is awesome. Tony Stallworth is a good intelligent and stone heart killer if you mess with his family. He tries to be fair and setup where everybody can live and make money but you know you always have those greedy a--s peoples who always want more and be the front line even when they were making less by the white man and a brother comes in and try to give his brother equal shares but they get jealous of their own kinds, wow; that's some crazy stuff. Angela who was a good woman but to delicate for Tony to make as his wife. Now Sugar that girl got some ump about herself and Tony first encounter with her caught his attention. Sugar and Tony are soul mate and as soon as Tony let Angela leave the states he begin his journey of chemistry and true love from a woman that hold not only his heart but also captivated the gangsta shyt that only Tony knows when time get real and bullets starts to fly only Sugar can be that Queen who keep his organization from being overthrown by betrayal of co workers who has know loyalty of the hands that feed and support their family. History of scenery and for real gangsta living in this book of Gangsta Shyt!

What can I say?? First read by this author and couldn't been happier to read. This author writes so smooth you just go with the flow not missing a beat. Love Tony n Sugar she's one bad boss Tony taught her well. Always gonna be those who deny n betray the one who gave them everything but that didn't stop this show. FUN FUN FUN

This book picks up right where Sticky Notes Part 1 stopped. I loved it as much as part 1. A little more serious but still quite light hearted. Discovered I was correct about why this was going on but was totally blown away to find out who Miss Wazzu was. I highly recommend this book. It is very clean and so much fun.

Funny, yet tender book

I couldn't wait to read this and know how Katherine and Quinn would end up. The book is predictable, somewhat.... but I don't care about that AT ALL. I loved to see how the author worked their relationship and I smiled often throughout this book. Again, the grandmother is precious ! This book is delightful to read. I will recommend this book and this author to others !!

As a volunteer science reader for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, I have probably read 20 beginning Biology texts cover to cover in the past 10 years. This one is by far my favorite. It is extremely well-written, has amazing illustrations, and is one of the few introductory texts that treats plant biology as more than a footnote to the biology of animals.
The book never talks down to the reader and is engaging enough that even volunteeers with no interest or background in science looked forward to working with it and on more than one occassion I had to stop recording because my monitor wanted to ask quetions about the current subject.

Still Using IT!

I'm a student in a medical school and I'm still using this book whenever I need good quality pictures of anything from microscobic views of miosis to relatively simpler and understandable illustrations and tables.

Good book, GREAT price, easy transaction. Only quibble--book was described as unmarked but there are underlines, highlights, and the occasional doodle in it. Cover is sturdy & pages secure, that's what I wanted most.

This fantasy/spy series is not to be missed

Jaz Parks and her crew are sent to the Middle East on a mission, teamed with her twin brother Dave and his squad. Their mission is to assassinate the mysterious Wizard in control of a force of zombies. But there is a mole in Dave's team. Can Jaz find the mole, uncover the truth behind the Wizard, fight the reavers sent after her each morning because of a mark on her forehead, and convince her boss not to believe a manipulating psychic?

Whew! This latest Jaz Parks adventure is the most jam-packed yet! With non-stop action and adventure, this fantasy/spy series is not to be missed. With deadly creatures around every corner, Jaz is used to battling the forces of evil. But when her benefactor takes her through hell itself, Jaz is thrown into a whole new playing field. Rardin doesn't disappoint in this latest installment. With plenty of suspense, action, and romantic angst, I'm already impatient for the next in the series.

I really love this series. There's adventure and some serious butt-kicking, but most of all it's populated with strong, likeable characters. It's the characters that keep me coming back for more. Our heroine, Jaz Parks, is an assassin. After her crew was obliterated by vamps (which happened prior to the first book in the series), she gets assigned to work with Vayl. Vayl's a 300+ vampire who also works as an assassin for the government. In the first book we get to know Jaz & Vayl, in the second we get to see the interplay between them and with their new team (a former PI, a gadget genius, and a seer). In this book, the dynamics set up during the second book really get tested. Both Jaz & Vayl must confront their pasts in order to stop their current target, the Wizard. Don't think Dorothy & Toto, but rather dead-raising necromancer in the Middle East. There's also the pesky business of a mole on the team and a group of reavers gunning for Jaz who's been marked for death. All the gangs back, with a few new characters of both the normal and paranormal, dead and undead, persuasion. It's really a great read, and I can't wait for the next one! I recommend that you read the first two books in the series before diving into this one -- you won't be disappointed: Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Jaz Parks, Book 1) and Another One Bites the Dust (Jaz Parks, Book 2).

This Jaz ain't got that swing

OK, I've now read the first three Jaz Parks books, which I bought sight unseen pretty much on the concept alone, and I have to say I should have bought just the first one and then thought about it.

I thought the first one was average, the second so-so and this one sub-par. Here are some of the problems I have with the series in general and with this book in particular.

The setting of the books is very vague. We're in a world very much like ours except magic works, there are vampires, witches and the standard Urban Fantasy types. That's fine, but apparently there are other differences too, which we can't guess, and which we aren't told about. Case in point: Iran. In this book, Jaz spends most of her time in Iran. Apparently Iran in her world is still a nasty, woman-debasing theocracy, but when just when you think you have the general picture, Jaz stumbles into a pagan goddess's temple in the middle of Tehran. Obviously, this would not be tolerated in our Iran, and then you realize: "hmm, Islam has never been mentioned.. Is Jaz's world's Iran some *other* kind of woman hating theocracy? If so, what kind?" This would seem like important information! In book two, we are introduced to Reavers -- mystical bad guys who seem invented for poorly thought out reasons and who don't make much sense. In this book not only do we have Reavers, but Jaz goes to Hell, and we are again left totally without a clue as to how her Hell relates to any religion, if it does at all. Both the depiction of hell and the invention of Reavers to be bad guys without any definite theological underpinnings seem designed more to avoid offending believers of any stripe than for telling a good story. This story also pulls several other concepts out of the author's hat simply because she felt she needed them, not because they made sense. I'm thinking in particualr of the Portals, and of actually visiting Raoul.

Jaz is a CIA assassin who often works in the US. Now the CIA in our world is strictly forbidden from working in the US. Cynics believe that that rule is broken, but it is the rule. Jaz should at least establish that the rule doesn't exist in her world or that she's aware they are breaking it for "the greater good". This is especially true since one of the nicer aspect of the books is an uncomplicated "we are the good guys" stance. I also don't believe in her team, particularly in her 'Q', Bergman, who doesn't even officially work for the agency. There is no way either he or Cassandra would be allowed on missions -- much less to supply equipment directly to agents in the field. Also, Jaz seems incapable of going more than a few pages without calling Vayl her "boss", but he does virtually nothing in planning team operations. In fact, he generally seems to work at her direction.

Vayl's character is a problem as well. He's supposed to be super-hot and I'm sure the overall arc of the series will have him and Jaz becoming a couple, but he is almost totally uninteresting, and seems to drop out of the books totally for long segments.

Vayl and the "ill defined world" collide in this book. He's prepping an Iranian woman to become a vampire, and we're told this is a long involved process wherein the vampire must meditate and be in the right zen state. Further, we're told that unwilling humans can *not* be turned. OK, that's a bit different than standard Urban Fantasy, and is nice -- except that it directly contradicts one of Jaz's ongoing angst-fests about having to kill her sister-in-law after she was turned. It makes absolutely no sense that her sister-in-law was turned willingly, so I'm calling trainwreck on that point.

In a strictly literary sense, the biggest sin of the Jaz books is the insane overuse of flashbacks. I suppose some of it is excusable, especially for events that took place before the series started, but in this book, there are numerous cases of Jaz interrupting the main narrative to flash back to events which took place within *this* adventure. Her trip to Hell is the most jarring and annoying. It could have been much more easily told in sequence. The climactic battle scene in this book commits another literary sin in having the point of view leave our first person narrator (Jaz) for a clumsy "as they later told me" sequence.

Frankly, I'm not sure if I care enough at this point to go to the next book.
