This book covers the basic course which for many years has been the foundation of all training at the Katinka School of Dress Designing and includes measurement and block patterns, circular patterns, simple pattern designing, yokes, dart manipulation, sleeves, collars and necklines, skirts, and the one-piece dress foundation.

This edition also features a Fashion Supplement which offers directions illustrated with forty illuminating diagrams for the following subjects: shirt and jacket blocks for casual wear, shoulder pad allowances, cuff and sleeve openings, pockets, wrap and strap (or placket) openings, and halter necks.

About the Author
Natalie Bray trained in Paris while connected with a Court dressmaking business in London. The techniques she pioneered and perfected revolutionised dress pattern designing. Her teaching has had a profound influence on design, production and education.

The purpose of this book is to provide beginning students in agriculture with a systematic introduction to the basic concepts and issues in economics as they relate to a major segment of the US economy—namely, the food and fiber industry. This requires that the student understand. the microeconomic and macroeconomic forces influencing the decisions of producers and consumers of food and fiber products, which include (1) farmers and ranchers, (2) the agribusinesses that supply them with production inputs and credit, (3) the agribusinesses that process food products and manufacture fiber products, and (4) the agribusinesses that provide marketing and related services at the wholesale and retail levels to both domestic consumers and overseas markets.

We begin the book by answering the question raised by the title of Chapter 1, "What is agricultural economics?" We do this by first defining the field of economics and then developing a definition of agricultural economics based on the role that agricultural economists play at both the micro and macro levels. Chapter 2 discusses the changing structure of agriculture during the post-World War 11 period and the structure of those sectors in the economy that supply farmers and ranchers with inputs and process their output.

Part II helps students understand the economic decisions made by consumers of food and fiber products. The topics covered here include the forces influencing consumer behavior (Chapter 3) and the concept market demand for a particular product (Chapter 4). Part II concludes with the elasticity of demand (Chapter 5). The specification of various elasticity measures is supplemented by empirical examples and their relevance to decision making in the food and fiber industry, including the potential magnitude of consumer response and the implication for producer revenue.

Part III turns to the supply side of the market. Chapter 6 describes some basic fundamentals of assessing current business performance. Issues related to resource use and production response by businesses in the short run are explained in Chapter 7. This is followed by a discussion of the economic forces underlying the firm's input use (Chapters 8) and the firm's choice of commodities to produce (Chapter 9). Chapter 10 introduces the market supply curve, followed by the determination of market clearing prices and quantities under perfect and imperfect competition in Chapter 11. Empirical examples illustrate the magnitude and applicability of the relationships covered in the chapter.

Part IV addresses the role of government in the food and fiber industry. Chapter 12 outlines the general nature of government involvement in farm economic issues, consumer issues, resource issues, and international trade issues. Resource issues are also addressed in other chapters as well. Chapter 13 explores the relationship between market equilibrium and farm program policy, introducing the variety of approaches taken to support prices and incomes of farmers over the last 50 years. This includes the current farm commodity legislation set to expire after 2002.

Part V focuses on the macroeconomics of agriculture. Chapter 14 outlines the general linkage between product markets and national output, Chapter 15 illustrates the consequences of business fluctuations in the economy, Chapter 16 documents the importance of monetary policy to the economic performance of the economy, and Chapter 17 does the same thing for fiscal policy. Part V establishes the relationship between events in the general economy and their impacts on agriculture and other sectors in the U.S. food and fiber industry. Chapter 18 concludes this part of the book with a brief walk through the last several decades, illustrating graphically how changes in the macroeconomy affected the economic performance of agriculture.

Part VI focuses on international agricultural trade issues. Chapter 19 examines the growth and instability of agricultural trade, including the relative dependence on exports and imports. Chapter 20 focuses on the foreign exchange market, the international monetary system, and the effects of foreign exchange rates on U.S. agricultural trade. Chapter 21 explores the rationale for why nations trade and who gains from trade. Chapter 22 addresses agricultural trade policy, the rationale for restricting free trade, and the trade policy decision-making mechanisms and institutions. Finally, Chapter 23 examines the formation of preferential trading arrangements and their potential impact.

Each chapter concludes with a summary of the chapter's purpose and the major points covered. In addition, the key terms used in the chapters are defined. Most chapters also include a number of exercises the readers can use to test their understanding of key issues covered in the chapter. There is also a list of references and further readings.

This textbook differs substantially from the traditional introductory agricultural economics textbook in several ways. First, the book explicitly goes beyond the farm gate to address the entirety of the food and fiber industry, which accounts for about 17% of U.S. national output. Second, the book places an unusually strong emphasis on the macroeconomics of agriculture (five chapters) and international trade (five chapters). The experience of the 1980s and 1990s certainly has shown that farmers and ranchers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, and consumers of food and fiber products are significantly affected by macroeconomic policies and trade agreements.

About the Author
KE Payne was born in Bath, the English city, not the tub, and after leaving school she worked for the British government for fifteen years, which probably sounds a lot more exciting than it really was.

Fed up with spending her days moving paperwork around her desk and making models of the Taj Mahal out of paperclips, she packed it all in to go to university in Bristol and graduated as a mature student in 2006 with a degree in linguistics and history. After graduating, she worked at a university in the Midlands for a while, again moving all that paperwork around, before finally leaving to embark on her dream career as a writer.

She moved to the idyllic English countryside in 2007 where she now lives and works happily surrounded by dogs and guinea pigs.

Adorable story!

What an adorable story! It was very well done! Very poignant. The characters were very well developed. I loved Libby! She was a loyal friend and quite spunky!

Good Book

This was a heart warming story of coming out and being proud about it. The characters where fun, loving, caring, and easy to connect with. I am normally not a fan of British based books because half the time trying to understand them is hard but this one was easy to understand. It was an all around good book.

Terrific YA story

Seventeen year old Tabitha Morton, (Tabby) is devastated. Her family have moved down to London from the northeast of England. Tabby feels like her life is on a downward spiral having left her girlfriend, Amy, in the northeast after declaring her undying love. How could her life not suck? After all, two years is a long time to be together, just to be torn apart.

To top everything and put the icing on the cake, Tabby's parents have enrolled her in the very posh Queen Victoria Independent School for Girls. They are hoping this will put Tabby back on track with her studies and make a lady of her.

Tabby is not impressed and sets out to thwart and hamper her parents at every turn. She detests her school, causes disruptions and her relationship with her parents drops to an all time low.

The day Tabby meets Eden Palmer, she begins to have second thoughts about school and her move to London. Is it so bad after all?

When Tabby's girlfriend, Amy, visits one weekend, their reunion is a disaster. Amy has some news which may not go down too well with Tabby. In light of Amy's revelation, Tabby knows she has choices to make. She needs to find a new path to follow.

Eden is hiding a secret and battling some personal issues. But, she introduces some new possibilities and directions for them both.

Tabby slowly begins to allow the changes to alter her way of thinking and begins to turn her life around. All these changes are because of her.

Although this is a young adult book, don't let that stop you from buying it and enjoying it. I was hooked in from the first page right the way through to the last page. KE Payne has a wonderful way with words and her stories are well written and emotionally charged. She really seems to get into the teenage mind. Although I'm well past my teens, I could still identify with the feelings Tabby and Eden were experiencing. In fact, I couldn't put this book down once I'd started it and read well into the night to finish it.

Both Tabby and Eden are well developed, multi-faceted characters, and are backed up by a wealth of secondary characters to interact and progress the story forward at a nice steady pace. Some are friends, some are insufferable and not nice to know, but they are all essential to the story.

There is a lot crammed into this book and KE Payne has managed to get the point across that it is okay to be gay. We follow Tabby who knows what she is, what she wants and who she wants, to the indecisive Eden, who, although deep down, she suspects she may be a lesbian, is confused and wants to have her cake and eat it too.

Homophobia, teen angst, teen romance, coming out, keeping secrets, is all dealt with in a sympathetic and understanding way against a back drop of an upper crust school and parents at the end of their tethers with their teenage daughters. Hard for any parent, let alone when you find out your daughter is a lesbian. KE Payne has really shown us what is was like for two very different sets of parents and how they each reacted and handled the situation.

I'm looking forward to reading more from this up and coming author soon.

Well Amy has done it again..Only this time with a totally different type of book!This is nothing like Amy's Mobster series.There are new characters,new romance,survival,Avalanches.Be prepared to fall in love with this Novella.Libby,Jill and Cassie set out on their yearly weekend snow adventure and literally run into Kyle,Randy and Alex.During an outing a storm blows in stranding them.Find out how they overcome the cold,the weather,found romance and throw in a crazy person lurking around.Will they survive this?
Amy has had me entrenched in her Mobster series so I was so excited to be able to review Frosted Over for her.Which is definitely not a mobster book.The characters reacted better then I would have had I been stranded. Amy has a way of writing that entrenches you in a story and keeps you begging for more.I want more Frosted over!Amy is such a wonderful author,I hope everyone enjoys Frosted Over as much as I have.I as always look forward to reading everything Amy writes

Nice suspense story!

I am a huge fan of Amy Rachiele from her Mobster series, and was excited to get a copy of Frosted Over for review. It was a very enjoyable novella, and my only complaint is that it could have been longer with some more details on the falling in love side.

Frosted Over is the story of three friends taking a weekend vacation to Mount Carter for a cross country ski trip. Libby, Cassie, and Jill have no idea what is really in store for them. A freak snow storm and an avalanche may not be their worst nightmares.

But there is a good side, too. They meet three guys, Kyle, Randy, and Alex, that might be their only salvation through the nightmare. This was a little too instant love for me, which is why I wish the story was extended a little to more of after escaping the storm, but it was still very sweet. The boys were definitely swoon worthy and doting.

This was a great quick story to read, and I look forward to future books by Amy.
