Reunion - Ein Wiedersehen der ganz speziellen Art...

Eigentlich haette der Titel auch 'Redemption', auf Deutsch 'Wiedergutmachung' heissen koennen. Denn genau DAS will Tony Collins mit seiner Geschichte, sagt er selbst.
Er, der sich selbst einen 'Karriere-Journalisten' nennt - einer, der ueber Jahrzehnte hin aus Kriegsgebieten in Suedost-Asien fuer die Nachrichtenagenturen in aller Welt die abscheulichsten Details berichtete. Ueber Menschen - gross oder klein, alt oder jung, Geschlecht egal - die zerbombt, erschossen, in Stuecke gehackt und meistens vorher gefoltern wurden.
Und er, der nun wirklich schon alles gesehen und gehoert hatte, begegnete 1984 in Chonburi/Thailand in einem der riesigen Auffangslager fuer vietnamesische und kambodschanische Fluechtlinge dem damals gerade 15-jaehrigen Rith Samnang. Der schon ein Kriegsveteran unter den Roten Khmer geworden war; denn statt ihn, wie den Rest der Familie zu meucheln, benutzten sie ihn als Traeger. Und er wurde von ihnen zu unsaeglichen Dingen gezwungen. Er bot sich Tony als Uebersetzer und Hilfskraft an - gratis, nur fuer Essen, Zigaretten und einer Flasche Whiskey...
Und dann folgte die unvermeidliche Frage: "Kannst Du mir helfen? Ich will nach Amerika." Und Tony half, brachte mit Beziehungen Rith Samrang, nun Sam Rith, bei den Andersons unter. Wo er sich zu einem notorischen Verbrecher entwickelte und nach 10 Jahren - die meiste Zeit davon im Knast - wieder nach Kambodscha abgeschoben wurde.
Und nun hoert Tony wieder von ihm - per e-mail, Facebook und dann beginnen sie, ueber Skype zu telefonieren. Und Tony erzaehlt Sam, dass er nach Phnom Penh kommen wird, um ueber das UN-Kriegsverbrecher-Tribunal zu berichten. Und Sam bietet wieder seine Hilfe an - gratis, Essen fuer Worte, wie in den alten Zeiten...
Aber zuvor hat er noch ein Problem: Er soll nach Bangkok kommen und vor dem Klub der Auslandskorrespondenten sprechen - sie seien auf ihn gekommen, da er etwas ueber die Roten Khmer zu erzaehlen haette, und auch uebersetzen koennte.
Also Uebersetzer, Geschichtenerzaehler und Ueberlebender der Killing Fields, der Felder des Todes, in Personalunion. Ein echter Glueckstreffer fuer das veranstaltende Komitee, denkt sich Tony. Und bezahlt ihm auch das Ticket nach Bangkok. Sam wohnt bei ihm und sein 'Auftritt' vor Komitee und Zuhoerern im Club wird ein voller Erfolg. Als Sam seine Geschichte erzaehlt, faellt eine Dame in Ohnmacht, eine andere rennt zum Bad, um sich zu uebergeben. Die Geschichte hat es aber auch in sich. Sam - der Hit des Abends!
Und dann kommt Tony nach Phnom Penh, und dort ist Sam auf seinem Turf. Er ist Uebersetzer beim Prozess gegen die uebrig gebliebenen Anfuehrer der Roten Khmer. Und arrangiert dann fuer seinen langjaehrigen Freund ein Interview der ganz besonderen Art. Mit einem Ex-Roten Khmer der Gruppe, fuer die Sam den Traeger machen durfte...

Und Tony sollte eigentlich dort, in Phnom Penh erkannt haben, dass es keiner Wiedergutmachnung bedarf.
Und dass es sich wirklich mehr darum handelt, sein Gewissen zu erleichtern, die Geschichte zu erzaehlen - seine und Sams. Und die der Luege und des Betrugs...
Denn - die meisten Kinder der Killing Fields, der Felder des Todes, waren durch die Roten Khmer und dann durch die Jahre in den Konzentrations-Lagern einfach 'beschaedigte Ware', unrettbar verdorben und psychisch noch mehr als physisch geschaedigt. Und ohne richtige Hilfe - speziell fuer die Psyche! Dann kommen des oefteren solch 'Ueberlebenskuenstler' wie Rith Samnang alias Sam Rith dabei heraus.
Und ich persoenlich kann mir nicht vorstellen, was Tony, der es mit Sam ja wirklich mehr als nur gut meinte, anders haette machen koennen.

Diese Geschichte ist der Anthologie "Phnom Penh Noir" von Christopher G. Moore entnommen, in der uns bekannte, aber auch einheimische Schriftsteller mit der dunklen Seite der Hauptstadt Kambodschas bekannt machen. Leider bisher nur im Original erhaeltlich. Aber vor 20 Jahren schon brachte Mr Moore Zero Hour in Phnom Penh, auf Deutsch Stunde Null in Phnom Penh - Ein Vincent Calvino-Thriller heraus. Echt lesenswert!! Genau wie Reunion!
Und es ist gut, dass die Welt mit Kambodscha bekannt gemacht wird, einem Land, in dem eine ganze Generation noch heute als Skelette unter den Pflugscharen auftaucht. Einem Land, das unsaeglichen Horror ueber sich und seine Kinder ergehen lassen musste. Und das immer noch am Heilen ist...
Aber DIESE Wunden koennen auch nicht durch das schnelle Besichtigen von Angkor Wat geschlossen werden.

Between Marco Polo in the late 13th century and French priest Abbe Huc in the 1840s, practically no European set foot in western China – then considered one of the most difficult regions in the world for road, rail and river navigation given its formidable topography of high mountains, deep valleys and great rivers. This isolation gave western China somewhat of a reputation amongst westerners as a hidden El Dorado – a place of great wealth and fertility. From the 1850s onwards, as the Victorian age was in full swing, Britons – and other westerners – began to develop a taste for overseas adventure, exploration and trade as the British Empire expanded its reach across the globe. Britain already had a strong hold in Hong Kong and was present in coastal treaty ports in China, but the Chinese market had not yet produced the massive increase in trade that many colonial expansionists had hoped for. A few adventurous souls began to believe that if access could be gained to the whole of China, through its inland ports, then access could be gained to the world’s largest market with some 400 million people – the size of the whole of Europe. This was not only access for trade purposes. Missionaries believed that the scope of the work they could do in inland China was endless, with a huge population most of whom had never heard of the word of God; and botanists and natural scientists wondered at the myriad exotic and as yet unknown species which flourished in China’s sub-tropical south-western corner. Others were just curious and had an appetite – and the budget to match – for visiting foreign faraway lands and the challenge of the unknown.Politically, opening up inland China was important to the British. Their aim was to develop a trade route from British India and Burma through China to British settlements in China’s coastal cities such as Canton and Hong Kong, as part of the competition between western powers for influence in Asia known as the Great Game. The French in particular were Britain’s adversaries for influence in western China, given the existing French stronghold in Indochina. French hopes were to reach the south-western Chinese province of Yunnan via the Mekong river through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. On the basis of these dreams, hundreds of British travellers and explorers set their sights on the Yangtze River – the main access route to the heart and western regions of China – and in particular the region of Chongqing (then known as Chungking) in the western Chinese province of Sichuan – the biggest metropolis of western China. It was - and still is - a gritty inland city, worlds apart from the relatively cosmopolitan cities of China’s eastern seaboard. This book tells the story of their lives in this inland treaty port city, and surrounding region, from the 1870s to just after the Second World War when, for several years, Chungking served as the capital of China. It details the achievements and lasting impact of the British in western China in the fields of diplomacy, trade, culture, science, education and religion. This includes introducing cricket and the first football match to the region; the printing press and the camera; the first steamship to sail through the treacherous Three Gorges – now tamed by the world’s largest dam; and the inspiration for the longest book on China ever to be written in the English language. The idea for this book came during my own time spent living in Chongqing from 2007 – 2010 as Political Consul at the British Consulate-General in the city. Chongqing was not the easiest of diplomatic postings. I started to wonder about the Europeans who came to Chongqing 150 years before me, and the city they must have experienced. This book stands as a record of Chongqing’s European past and the contributions of many foreigners to the city’s development, lest it should all soon disappear amidst China’s rush to develop.

Alexandra Needham has been a member of the British diplomatic service since 2004. From 2007 – 2010 she served as Political Consul at the British Consulate-General in the Chongqing (formerly Chungking) in western China, now one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Chongqing was not the easiest of diplomatic postings, and the idea for this book came from that time there. She currently works in Laos as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Vientiane.

He can't imagine taking orders from a woman. They argue and match wits through a fantastical adventure in a very reimagined twist of a classic tale.

About the Author
Dana Taylor writes books with a mystical touch. Born andraised in California, she attended the University of Redlands and received herB.A. with a theatre major. Her senior year sent her to Oklahoma for a theatreinternship, which resulted in a whirlwind courtship and a long marriage.  Her two romantic comedies, AIN'T LOVE GRAND?and DEVIL MOON: A MYSTIC ROMANCE (A Movers and Shakers List Title) are set inAmerica's heartland. Opposites attract, loveable characters, and a good dose oflaughter.  Through the years, she and herhusband raised two daughters and numerous animals, with varying results.  A dog ate a hamster and the iguana escaped ahomemade cage. One rabbit proved it could consume a remote with no ill effects(except to the remote.)The daughters turned out fine.

Her imagination led her to writing romantic adventures, alsowith a good dose of comedy. Good Editor Needed

I have to agree with a previous reviewer that this book is tedious, unbalanced, and unfocused, a trait shared by some self-published authors unwilling to submit their work to critical editing, but it has a few good moments near the end. Do I recommend it to the average reader? No. Writers should stick to what they know, and there is just too much this author doesn't know about the setting, the time, and in general, how people think, talk and react, that reduces the enjoyment possible in reading it.

Wonderful!

I love anything and Robin Hood related! The story was great, loved the plot line. The characters were maddeningly awesome, Robin and Simon had wonderful chemistry, their opposing personalities made them so much more likable. WARNING: there are some extremely cheesy sex scenes in here, pretty graphic too, wasn't really expecting that, but if you can get around those, and especially if you like those, you won't be disappointed!!

Not appropriate for teens

Personally i loved the story line and plot in this book! And that is was not just a romance novel but packed with action also. And all though a bit predictable at points still enjoyable! I would just give a word of caution to the fact that I would have given this book 5 stars had it not been for the amount of sex! It was greatly described 3 times and implied at many others! I being only 15 and just wanting a innocent romance was caught off guard as it happened first 1/2 way through the book! I am a person though who had to finish reading a book once I start it so I kept going expecting that to only happen once, but no it occurred multiple times! I was so mad at this unneeded vulgarity to an otherwise pretty innocent story ( minus some breast fondling) . I could not stop reading though as I needed to finish it because it was an intriguing story. So I would so good book but inappropriate for people not older
