The Captive Awaits her Destiny
By Brittany
Victoria is virtually a prisoner in Kensington Palace. Her mother and her mother's chamberlain, Sir John Conroy, are her guards. They will not allow her to associate with anyone that has not been thoroughly and critically checked to make sure Victoria is not made harmed by their very presence. Even her governesses are under scrutiny. She is not even allowed to be alone! Someone must always be with her. Her only hope is in contemplating her coming of age, whereupon she may be free and able to take her "Uncle King's" crown without her dreaded captures taking regency. Her best friends are her "dear" sister Feodora, married and living in Germany; her Uncle Leopold, her cousin-in-law and uncle as well as King of the Belgians; Lehzen, her faithful governess; the King and Queen, whom she is rarely allowed to see; and her cousins that she is also rarely allowed to see. She has scheming uncles trying to usurp her right to the throne, and family fighting over her. Every day she comes closer to her dream of adulthood, and her guards' despair at loss of power.
This is the first book in the Queen Victoria Series, as well as the first one that I have read in the series (I think that is how they plan for you to read them!). I have read the Royal Diaries version, as well as the A&E mini-series "Victoria and Albert". I was very pleased to find them saying the same things about Queen Victoria's early life. I also enjoyed reading about William IV's and Queen Adelaide's life, as they are usually passed over in history.

A fairly captivating piece
By Alex
The first of four books about the longest reigning monarch in British history, Queen Victoria.

Growing up at the tale end of her uncle's reign, that of King George IV, she is in the total and complete control of her mother and Sir John Conroy, a man she comes to loathe, with good reason. No one, well almost no one, really likes her mother, or him, and when her uncle, William, comes to the throne the family dynamic only changes for the worse. Her mother will not give in on silly things, and makes things worse by insisting on things were she shouldn't. William, being king, but maybe not always so sane, allows himself to be supremely irriataed by her. (And not always without cause mind you, Victoria's mother is insanely irritating.) The sole voice of reason in Victoria's immediate life if the Queen, Adelaide.

Not only do you get a look at Victoria's younger years, but you also get a look into the Court of William IV and his wife. I knew very little, well next to nothing, about his reign. And while I didn't learn a great deal more I feel like I no longer have a gap as big as before. His reign was short, compared to his father's, but it wasn't peaceful at all. I felt like the media of the time wasn't very different from now, and that made this story even more readable for me. Like I was looking for the next thing the "papers" were saying. Good gossip rags.

This is a book to be read. Plaidy scores very well with this one. I'm glad to have this one to follow on the high of the last one.
